What Exactly Is Medical Grade Ozone?

Oxygen as a single atom is deficient in electrons. This makes the atom very unstable, and as a result single oxygen atoms cannot exist in nature all by themselves – at least not for more than nanoseconds. However, two oxygen atoms can join together to share electrons, and this combination forms a very stable molecule referred to as O2. This is the stable form of oxygen that is found in the atmosphere.

When an energetic force, such as electricity or ultra-violet light, is imposed upon a molecule of O2, the two oxygen atoms are temporarily split apart into single oxygen atoms. Then, in a matter of nanoseconds these highly unstable oxygen atoms will pair up again and reform back into O2 molecules. But a small percentage of them will unite in a ménage-a-trio known as ozone. Thus, ozone, referred to as O3, is a molecule which consists of three oxygen atoms all sharing the same electrons. Because there just are not enough electrons to go around to keep three oxygen atoms completely happy, ozone is a relatively unstable molecule. This instability is why it is such a powerful biological stimulant.

How is Medical Grade Ozone made?

Ozone is made by passing pure oxygen gas through a crystal tube through which an electrical spark is directed. The electrical energy breaks apart the oxygen molecules as described above, and what emerges from the other side is a mixture of oxygen and ozone.

How is Medical Grade Ozone used?

Doctors trained in the use of medical grade ozone know how to administer it into the blood, joints, spine, and body cavities such as the bladder and the intestines.

What conditions respond to Ozone Therapy?

Since oxygen is so fundamental to why people get sick and how the body heals, ozone therapy has been found to be useful for many conditions including: heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, herpes, hepatitis, interstitial cystitis, diabetes, Lyme disease, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, intestinal disorders, and auto-immune disorders.

What is Prolozone® Therapy?

Prolozone® is a homeopathic/oxygen-ozone injection technique developed and pioneered by our president Dr. Frank Shallenberger. It is excellent for all forms of musculo-skeletal and joint pain including chronic neck and back pain, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative and arthritic hips and knees, degenerated discs, and shoulder and elbow pain. Because in many cases Prolozone actually corrects the pathology of the disorder, there is a 75% chance for the chronic pain sufferer to becoming permanently pain free.

Is Ozone Therapy Safe?

The primary mission of the AAO is to provide educational and therapeutic standards for the safe and effective use of medical ozone therapy in America.  A safety study in the overall use of ozone therapy was published in 1982.  The reference is below.  That study found that in a group of 384,775 patients treated with various forms of ozone therapy including a total of 5,579,238 treatment sessions a very low complication rate of 0.006% was observed. The only major complications occurred when ozone was improperly provided from untrained practitioners. The AAO was formed to standardize and promote the safe and correct medical use of ozone therapy in the United States. Our members have taken extensive training on safe and proven protocols in ozone therapy and have passed examinations in addition.  As long as these guidelines are followed we believe that the data shows that ozone therapy is one of the safest of all medical therapies.

Additionally, ozone therapy has been used throughout the world for various medical, dental, and veterinarian indications for over fifty years. There are over 2300 peer reviewed scientific papers published on ozone therapy, and more are being published every day. These papers can be accessed on the library page of the academy’s web site.

These papers speak to the safety and efficacy of ozone therapy.

The AAO is a member of The International Medical Ozone Federation (www.imeof.org) which represents 21 different ozone related medical associations around the world. The IMEOF has dedicated itself to insuring that medical practitioners around the world are properly trained to use standardized ozone protocols to provide safety and maximum efficacy.  The IMEOF has published The Madrid Declaration which establiches safety and efficacy standards for ozone therapy.  This document has been published in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, English, Spanish, and Japanese.  See the reference below.
